Repairing wood on the shelf
« on: July 07, 2011, 04:11:00 PM »
Hi,

This is my first post on TradGang and I was wondering if you bowyers could help me out? I have a Very nice Mahaska longbow that is missing a piece of wood right at the edge of the shelf wear the leather wrap is. The riser wood is cocobola I believe. This is more than a splinter and runs in a vertical line down the grip underneath the wrap. It doesn't effect the performance of the bow but I would like to repair it just in case it decides to get worse.

Is there any type of filler, putty, etc. that you would recommend to fix it? Also, the bow has a flat satin finish...what would be a good brand to buy to touch up the shelf after the repair?

I appreciate all your help!

Hey DM welcome to Tradgang, you will find this place adictive

The absolute best way to solve the issue is with a picture of that bow where the damage is. (if you can do it)

is the missing piece flat on the back where it could be reglued? or is other ingenuity required to make the repair.

Good to see you here and good luck in your journey.

Hi Mike and thanks for the welcome. Unfortunetly I can't take a picture as of now because my camera quit working.

The missing piece (that I don't have) started right on the edge of the shelf where the top of the leather hand wrap meets the edge of the shelf and is just toward the string behind the leather rest on the shelf (about 1/2 to 3/4" from the center of the shelf. Also the missing piece was reddish in color.

Since I dont have the missing piece I guess it would need to be repaired with filler or putty?
