60" Bingham recurve tips?
« on: July 09, 2011, 11:04:00 PM »
Give me the negitive to adding 1/8" glass to the belly side of the tips on a 60" Bingham recurve. I need to cut a groove for the string to lay in but would rather smooth-on a 1/8" piece of phonlic to cut the groove in and not violate the limb glass. This should stiffin the tip area but would add weight. I have seen this done on older recurves. The ones I've seen had wood overlays for the string groove. Don

Don,
I wouldn't use glass or phenolic on the belly. The tips are pretty stiff on the 60" recurve already, they barely open with my 30" draw. You wont hurt the belly glass by filing grooves in it.
I didnt miss, thats right where I was aiming

I used it on mine and cant tell any difference over other bows. It went about 3/4 " down from string grove to the end.I sanded it tapered before gluing.  Mark

I have never tried glass or phenolic as a belly overlay.  I have used left over limb wood that was sanded very thin many times.  I didn't use it to stiffen the limb tip.  It just always seemed like a bad idea to weaken the glass with a groove.  The last several builds I have left the overlay off.  If they aren't needed they are just added weight at the worst possible spot on the limb.

Thanks guys,Bingham's instructions says not to file all the way thru the glass. I was thinking that would be a very small groove as I used .043 ULS glass. I could see me doing an OH CR#& and killing a bow. Don
