2 western wood bows
« on: July 10, 2011, 01:25:00 PM »
Keith Fairbairn (Treekiller) travels to MOJam every other year as its a long way from Washington state. He brings trade goods like obsidian and staves of yew and vine maple. We did some horse trading last year sending some yeller wood west and these two pieces of western wood home to Iowa to become a couple new sticks.

The first is a vine maple character bow 33@28 67" with kingwood tips. I considered piking it for more draw weight but decided I liked the way it shoots and its a great target bow and starter bow.

The second is 53@28 64" yew with buff horn tips and boa skin. I thinned the sapwood (not chasing a ring) and used the boa as rawhide backing.

Both are set up double shelf

Those kingwood tips are beautiful.  Great tillering on both bows!

They both look awesome! That vine maple has some nice wave to it. Its nice to be able to trade for wood that you would never have access too.

Nice looking bows Shaun. I got a piece or two of vine maple and a few sweet yew staves That I came by the same way.

Always fun to work with something different.

Nice Shaun!   I got my vine maple at mojam several years back, from Keith, I believe....and finally built a fine bow from it this year as well.  The thing shoots great, and I may use it as my "go to" bow this fall.   I'm in the finishing stages now....I'll bring up my thread I began a couple months back when I'm done and show the finished result.

Nice couple bows there!
