Need Hickory
« on: July 15, 2011, 01:21:00 PM »
I need hickory boards for some backed bows I want to do. Any ideas where to get some. No lumber yards around here seem to carry it and 3 rivers doesn't have any of their boards at the moment.

We have hickory out the wazoo at the lumber yards here in southern IN...but the boards are ginormous and rough cut.

Are you looking for belly cores or backing quality boards?

No menards up this way  :(  and no good hardwood dealers. Always worried about ordering from a lumber supplier as they just don't know what we are looking for in bow wood.

If I get a chance I'll see if I can stop in and see if they can locate some. How much and what size are you looking for?

Talked to a local cabnet maker today and he uses Hickory. So I am going to look at his off cuts and see who his supplier is. So hopefully I may be all set up. If it works out and anyone else needs hickory, drop me a line.  :)

Drums, Michigan is an awful long drive for some Hickory. If your ever headed to the Adirondacks of NY feel free to bring some and dropit off.I'll guarantee you a good meal, some hold my beer time and great scenery.

You can also try a Tractor supply, lowes, or Home Depot for some wheel barrel handles. I've found some really nice hickory ones for about  $16 and have nice great straight grain. You can buy individually. If you have access to a table saw or bandsaw your good to go.
didn't understand - now I do.
