Black Locust
« on: August 28, 2011, 12:45:00 PM »
Hurricane Irene has come and gone, leaving me with some thick branches of this stuff lying around the yard.  It's not very straight but I'm sure I can get a few risers out of it.  Anyone have suggestions for other uses?

If its 3" or more in diameter you cna build a bow from it. BL is good stuff.

Will be great for risers. But I would not try to make a bow from any tree limbs. The main trunk is the best.

roy , some of those locusts i have seen in ny are massive. maaaaaaaaaaaassive.

iirc , using any branch , you want to figure out which side was up and down (tension side and compression side).

Thanks guys. We do have some huge locusts around here - some as much as 24" in diameter. In fact one of our neighboring towns is called Locust Valley because it is heavily populated with the stuff.  I've already told my wife that if we move from Long Island, I'm taking some saplings with us.

Anyway, I chopped up much of my locust and set it in my garage to dry. I will be using it for risers. Unfortunately I didn't have any pieces straight enough for a bow.

Black locust also makes great laminations, for glass bows!
