Osage tip tips?
« on: September 02, 2011, 12:37:00 PM »
I have an 62" osage stave almost ready for a short string but I have a few questions about limb tips and nocks before I cut the groves.

So what are the ideal dimentions for osage tips for a bow around 45lb @ 28"?  Right now my tips are roughly 1/2" square tapering out to the rest of the limb. So how deep do the tips need to be if I go down to 3/8 as some suggest and how wide should the wood between the acutual nock groves be?

Also if I want to use a ff or modern string what do I need to do to the tips to protect them or can I get a way without overlays?

There are no rules. I usually end up with around 1/2" square tips on long bows. I would suggest a hardwood, bone or horn overlay if you want to use FF. Im not saying its needed, just a suggestion.

Half inch square is about right for your tips. You can make 'em smaller, but for a more rugged hunting bow, I would leave as is. Cut your grooves in teardrop shaped from back to belly. You could get by with as little as an 1/8" between the grooves but why would you want to. Be kinda flimsy IMO.

No, and can get by without tip overlays. Beef up the loops with extra B-50 or something.........Art

Thanks!  That answers it for me.  Groves will be cut tonight and a FF or equiv string is in its future, if it makes it that far.  It has a bad spot mid limb but I will make it or brake it!

I have only made two pin nock bows. They were about 5/16" wide and 1/2" deep.

ii woukd add overlays if it was me. I have had them split before. I've also had them never have an issue without em. I have never had a problem when I've added knock overlays and they are simple to do. (i use superglue. The cheap stuff for 25cents a tube.
