1st Black Locust
« on: September 07, 2011, 10:47:00 PM »
Heres a few pics of a black locust bow I just finished. Its not much to look at but it flings an arrow pretty good. This is my first time workin with bl and I was pretty impressed with it. Its 66" long and 1.5" wide with a slight width taper to 1.25" at midlimb and then to 1/2" tips. Its 49# at 28" after shootin it in and only took 3/4" of set. I had to do a lot of heat straightening to get the tips to line up with the handle. I didnt cut a shelf in it because of a wiggle in the handle that makes it almost centershot. I usually glue tips on but it just didnt seem appropriate for this bow for some reason. Like said before its not much to look at but thanks for lookin.

Forgot to mention, Art helped me out quite a bit and gave me some pretty good tips through the tillering process on this bow. Thanks for the help Art.

When was the wood cut for your bow Jamey? Like many others, I've had my share of problems with BL. But I have my suspicion my wood wasn't seasoned well enough...Art

That bow looks more than o.k. Well done. That wiggle in the handle makes it more interesting.

Thanks for all the compliments guys, it means a lot.

Art, I found these logs in a guys yard about 2 years ago and he told me the tree blew over in a storm about 3 years before that. He was kind enough to let me haul them off. I split one of the logs into staves right after I got them home and the other I just split a few months ago. So I guess the tree has been down around 5 years and this particular stave has been split and seasoning for a little over 2 years. I had to chase rings really deep to get under the cracks that the sapwood caused. I have to admit I was kind of intimidated by locust since I had heard it really likes to fret but I am very impressed with it as bow wood.

Frank, I hope you get to see me standing over a dead animal with it.
