First Build Complete With Timing Questions
« on: September 26, 2011, 03:58:00 PM »
Just finished a 64" Reflex Deflex from the Kenny M design, Love the bow... My question is that I have shot numerous arrow of different weight and size trying to see what is going to shoot best out of this bow, I have a lot of side to side movement in the arrow when shot, I have checked the tiller and I am within an 1/8 of an inch on top and bottom limb.  7 1/2 inch Brace height. I do not know what to do or check next. Any Ideas?

What draw weight do you have and what is the spine, length and point weigth of the arrow. Fishtailing arrows generally indicate an incorrect spined arrow or some improper release movement.

52@28
1916 125gr @30"
2213 30" and 125 grain
2312 30" and 125 grain
400 carbon all at 30" and 125 grain

The 1916 is to weak and the 2312 is to stiff for sure. These two probably won't fly straight. The 2213 should be ok. If it doesn't fly straight, then try points with different weight or change the brace hight a bit and see what happens. And make sure that you don't twist the string while drawing.

Are you shooting arrows with plastic or rubber vanes instead of feathers? They will kick out exiting a trad bow rest!!
Focus on the target!!

Sprinkle some baby powder on your bows shelf and arrow side plate and shoot some arrows. See if you have any kind of contact from your arrows. You could also try lowering your brace height to maybe 6 1/4 and shoot some arrows, then keep rasing your brace height a little at a time.

Thanks guys for the information, I am shooting 5" feather. Roy, I will try the baby powder trick, to see what happens.  Andy, I have ordered some weighted brass inserts I shot some Carbon Express 25O's full length this weekend and they shot better so maybe adding weight on the end and tweaking the brace height will help as well.  I am trying to pay close attention to my release of the string and did find that I was twisting my index finger counter clockwise a little ( I am a Right handed shooter)  So I think it may be a combination of several of the things yall mentioned.  Roy, I am also using hook and loop for my shelf and plate, I removed it from the plate and I can see where my arrow has been striking it, I chut my shelf to the center line, should I have overcut to allow for the Hook and loop thickness?  Thanks again for all the input and help. If you add weight at the point the arrows will fly better, because the FOC will get higher and higher FOC and heavy arrows generally means more stability. Adding weight at the end will make things worse, because it will lower the FOC of the arrows. Here you can find a document about the topic "Understanding and Applying FOC" by Dr. Ed Ashby that explains very well what FOC is and how it works.

hook and loop for my shelf and plate? What the heck is that Shon? With a stickbow Shon, a simple rest will work. The arrow should be rising up and away from the bow as it passes the arrow rest. Add in the parodox factor and you should have no fletching contact at all. Keep us posted.

The nocks arent to tight on the string are they? That will make arrows fly weird.

whats your draw length? hook and loop is velcro. I just use the fuzzy part for my rests. I have built 4 bows off of my KennyM form. the one I built for myself is 47 @ 28",cut 1/8" past center,  I draw 26 1/2 inches and shoot a 30" 5575 Goldtip carbon with a 125 grain point. I like to tiller 1/8" positive. The pic is the kennyM bow I completed last month, I used a bunch of glass in the riser for weight and strength.. I cut it 3/16" past center..Helen Just won the FITA state championship with it 2 weeks ago.

what's in your riser? for beauty stripes I was using 3 pieces of glass or 2 glass and one 1/8" strip wood and went overboard on the last one with 26 layers of glass..I will always use at least 18 pieces of glass from now on, the extra weight really makes the bow better for me. 7 1/2" brace height is a good start, I think mine ended up there too.

you know if you're over spined so much..you could also swap string materials.  If you're already using a dyneema string, you could go to a skinny string.  It will help boost performance and bring those arrows closer to correct spine.   Say 8 strand or so. you probably could go to 6.   I hate trying to find serving for the smaller strings...but it boosted my performance so much I had to switch arrow material (cedar to doug fir) to get something with enough spine.

If you're adding weight to your point I highly doubt foc is the problem more so than spine itself.  Get that spine on and your form flaws wont be so gross down range.   Adjust what you can (tuning) and work on what you're struggling with (form), and you'll see a gross improvment down range.

I have a spine chart for those arrows at home...gonna be a busy day today but I'll  try and post them later to give you and idear.

Some other things to try, moving silencers out to speed the string...adjust the strike point forward or back (put a small strip under the velcro) will also tweak dynamic spine, and of course playing with point weight will reduce dynamic spine.  I believe its 45grains is around 5lbs dynamic spine to give you and idear.  That may be off...I dont play with point weight perferring to find the right arrow shaft.

I still prefer bareshafting intially...group testing is good and probably better but I feel I get to fine tuning quicker with bareshafts.

tune tune tune and tune some more..you'll find that sweet spot  ;)

Thanks guys for all the help, I am trying everything mentioned above, so far I am improving with every try.  I found that the Carbon expresss 250"s 31" with 150 grain point and 100 grain glue in insert ( about 44% weight is upfront gives me a little room to cut arrow down  to get it around 33%)is shooting very good, Baby powder showed that I am making contact with the riser so i am going to shave it past center an 1/8th, and build a new string that is 8 strands.  I really appreciate all the help yall have given me. If you are ever in Alabama look me up and we can swap lies. haha
