bbo glue up (prep)

im ready for glue up... i think. boo and osgae glue joint is tight. i have a small pc to glue on for the handle and that glue joint is also tight. my form for the reflex is a copy of royfrompa's with the 3 way clamp set up. i have clamps every 5in, and have done a DRY run with all the pc's. im sure the more clamps the better. i need to know how much smooth on to mix. how long and at what temp to cook it, and what prep needs to be done the osage and the boo. like scratching the surface cleaning with acetone and so on. i suppose a link to a post would help.

O.K. Use a pressure strip of some sort. What I use is use a medium-hard rubber strip over the boo, with a pressure strip made from a 1/4 thick strip ripped from a clean 2X4 on top of the rubber. Thin enough to bend and provides even pressure and protects the boo from the clamps. I've seen thick leather used in place of rubber. Make sure everything is protected with plastic wrap.

Experience will tell you how much glue to mix, but better a little too much. I prefer Urac myself. It fills gaps well and doesn't require a hot box to get that ultimate bond. Mix according to directions. Smooth-on will work though. Do a search for smooth on in subject line of the bowyer's bench section. Plenty of answers there.

To prep the surfaces, you can score them with a fine tooth hacksaw blade clamped between two slats of wood in lieu of a toothing plane

My clamps are an inch apart. I haven't tried the pressure strip.

I toothing plane the back of the osage and the belly of the boo. Then blow the dust off and wipe it with denatured alcohol. Make sure you pad both the back of the boo and the belly of the osage. I use urac 185 for bbo bows. I clamp every 2 inches. Urac dries in about 8 hours without a heat box in 70 degrees. I always let my bows clamped up for 24 hours.. Do not glue on the riser section till after you take the bow out of the clamps, as the riser section of the bow will have some deflex to it after glue up. You have to match the riser cut  to the deflex of the bow.
