Tru Oil over lacquer
« on: November 23, 2011, 09:27:00 PM »
I have a bow with maple and walnut in the riser. The finish is, I'm almost sure, sprayed lacquer. The maple, having very small pores, is well finished. The walnut, with its much larger pores does not appear to be filled. Can I sand in a Tru Oil finish over the lacquer? I've done quite a few gun stocks and got a nice semi matt or egg shell finish with Tru Oil, but don't know if it will stick on the lacquer.

Thanks for the help. I have some shellac, but I've heard the shelf life isn't all that great once it's been opened. Afther Thanksgiving, I'll get a fresh can and maybe some lacquer. Duplicate the bow finish on a piece of scrap and then try the shellac and then the Tru Oil. If I run into problems, I'll post them here for others.

I agree with VB, stick with the finish that's on it or you could strip it all off then start fresh with Tru oil. I use Tru Oil on all my wood finish projects and I love the stuff, been using it for years on gun stock refinishes and now my bows.
