Building New Riser: Need Advice and Wood
« on: November 25, 2011, 08:47:00 AM »
Hey Guys,

Ive built about eveything else out of wood so I think I'm going to try to build a riser for an exsisting bow that I already have. I have some questions for you pros out there. Let me apoligize in advance for not knowing all of the bowyer lingo.

I have a 56" 56# @27" Timberghost Ridgerunner R/D TD longbow. The riser is 13". The limbs are mounted on the back of the riser(the side facing me when I shoot). The limb bolt is nearest the limb tip and there are 2 alignment pins coming out of the riser on each end.

I have figured out over time that I am a low wrist grip guy. This bow had an extremely high wrist grip. I modified the grip as much as I dared but am still not happy with it. The riser is a deflex design so there was only so much wood I could safely remove.

Ok here's what I want to do: I have a 60" 50# @28" R/D TD Fedora Xtreme that I absolutely love. It has a low wrist 12" straight riser. I want to build a mirror image of that riser for the Timberghost that is 15-16" and has the limbs mounted on the back instead of the front like the Fedora.

My observations so far: Holding the two strung bows side by side and lining up the strings, it appears that the angle that's cut on each riser where the limbs mount is the same. The only difference being that they are mounted on opposite sides. In my mind if I make a straight riser for the Timberghost it will change the brace height of the bow (make it shorter) if I don't adjust the angle that the limb mounts to the riser. The reason I want to make the riser 2" longer is because I want a taller sight window and hopefully a more forgiving bow with less pinch. I'm pretty sure that building a longer riser is going to change the draw weight but I'm not sure how.

I am going to need some wood for this project as well as what ever epoxy you guys reccomend (I've used West Brothers on lots of stuff with great results). I want to build the riser out of straight Bocote with two black phenolic strips. I could also use some info on where to get the hardwear I'm going to need. I'd say that the threaded sleeve that the riser bolt goes into is fairly standard. I'm not sure about the alignment pins. I haven't measured them but they look to be around 1/4" in diameter.

Well that's all I can think of for now. If I've left out anything please let me know. Thanks in advance for any advice or input.

" The limbs are mounted on the back of the riser(the side facing me when I shoot). "

Just so we get on the same page, the string side is the belly, odd as it seems! Back is toward target.

Can you take a pic with both bows , it would really help to grasp how this would work.

A 2" longer riser will lighten the weight, probably about 3-5#

I've never used West System, but I do know Smoothon is really good.

The inserts are pretty standard, I have those and the pins too.

If you can get a pic, it will help to understand this.

Anyway we need pics of the rehabbing! LOL  :D
Stay sharp, Kenny.
