Tiller/drawlength/efficiency
« on: November 26, 2011, 07:15:00 PM »
So... I hope I can present my question with some clarity here, as a novice, and not a bowyer. But I think I'm in the right forum.
I recently purchased ( on the classifieds here) a nice R/D longbow, offered as  45#@ 28". Receiving the bow, I see it's marked as 51#@30". My understanding is that either way, I'm actually pulling about 42#@27" (my draw length). Question is: at 42#, is the bow (arrow speed) LESS than optimal, as I'm not getting full draw on the limbs?
Hope this makes sense, and thanks in advance for feedback.

I'll try to answer the way I read this. If you had a bow built to 42# at your draw and not for longer and heavier the limbs would be lighter in weight[physical] and would be stressed to the max and perfom better. kind of like putting a governor on a go cart so your 4 year old can run a full bore go cart and not go 50mph....does that help. Or even like shooting a 300 mag with perfomance of a 308...why have it?

Stickbow,
I think you're answering the question I put out - my 42" pull is getting less than it would with a bow tillered to shorter length.
I thought the bow was buIlt for a 28" draw, and my 27" would be close enough. I was also impressed with the shape of the grip, which fits beautifully. Pointability is superb, and my groups are really good - but the bow is mediocre in speed.
Also, shooting around 10gpp on the arrows, I'm thinking of going lighter to help with that.

Whoops, I mean I'm shooting around 12gpp, and wanting to go down to 10.

you may not have all the speed you want BUT I bet the bow is quiet and with the momentum the arrow will carry you'll probably shoot thru your whitetails with a decent hit [NOT BONE HIT]!
