Martin Jaguar Mod to shoot off the shelf
« on: December 03, 2011, 12:07:00 PM »
Hi,
Have been a avid traditional shooter on and off for the past 30 yrs. Just purchased a Martin Jaguar recurve  - like it a lot, but am kicking around some kinds of ideas to 'modify' the riser area to accomidate shooting off the shelf aka G. Fred Asbell style and getting the arrow right about my hand as much as possible. I shoot feathers of-course and fingers and am trying to think of what I can make up to 'build out' that riser area to be able to move the area over to center shot to shoot off the shelf on a Martin rug plate rug rest.
Any ideas?
I thought maybe of taking a wood block and sanding and shaping it to the riser 'curve' so-as to fit into the riser and build out the riser more....
Anyone run into this?
I know it wold have been much easier to buy a nice lightly used Bear Kodiak Hunter or Kodiak Mag instead - but for what I have to spend on a recurve now - the Martin was prob almost half of what a nice used Bear recurve would cost me...

???

PS  I know it would be much easier to just shoot a Whisker Biscuit rest - but that isn't going to get the arrow down directly above my hand like I want it to be really....tho maybe close...but...

You could take some thick pieces of leather and glue them together with superglue and then soak the entire piece with superglue and then shape it out to where you need it to be.

Thanks...that's what one of my friends suggested I try...and sounds like one of the best methods that would be easier then trying to make a piece of wood and shape it to fit the riser...

You can do a floppy style of rest, that is just a piece of leather glued on and it really feels like shooting of your hand.

I once saw a really thick shelf pad on a hoyt gamemaster II, it was like 3/8" thick or so. it was a fairly firm foam with a thin layer of soft woven material on top. If you could find this and use on against the arrow plate as wella s the shelf, that'd bring you pretty darn close to center I think. it was a black color and seemed to look good with the modern looks of the metal/glass takedown bow.

P.S. Shot great off that pad
I think I shocked the guy at the archery shop when the shafts on the three arrows he gave me were scratched trying to jam in the same hole in the target.

Hope that helps

I made up a special plate of wood to build the riser out toward centershot with a martin rug rest and rug plate on the riser - looks good and I think that will work well - as I once did that years ago to a PS Coyote bow and it worked like a charm - and I got perfect arrow flight along with being able to shoot 'off the shelf' with my XX75's and 5 inch helical fletched arrows! Simple, nothing to go wrong, no worries or concerns as with any of the 'shoot thru' rests out there today!
