Bamboo, Cane, Carbon equivalent Question
« on: December 27, 2011, 09:57:00 AM »
I just started building selfbows in August of this year and would now like to try and put together some arrows. Two bows I've built shoot Gold Tip Carbon 3555 (I know Carbon) arrows full length with 200 grains up front.

My question is I'm thinking about starting with bamboo or Tonkin cane for my first arrows, what spine would I need to be close to the 3555's ?

What's the weight of your bow and what length arrow are you wanting to shoot?  Bamboo is often naturally tapered and extra spine is required to compensate for that. Usually 10# or so will handle that. Although, tonkin sometimes doesn't show much taper, always a good idea to check for any weight forward by balancing them on a pencil or something similar.

Art 53# and 54# @ 27"s (the Hackberry and the Chittamwood) They both shoot the above 3555 well. I have never worried about the length of my arrow as long as it shoots well. I have some that are 31"s and some that are as short as 28 1/2"s just depends on how they fly. I guess if I had my druthers I'd like to build some 28 1/2"ers.

Like Pat mentioned, this type material is very  spine tolorant. If you're shooting around, say a 1" handle, just spine your arrows about the same weight as your bow for a 28-28 1/2" BOP finished arrow. If your bows are cut closer to center or you want a longer arrow you'll need to up spine for that.

Easiest way to orient these to your bow is to place the clear side of the boo/cane against the bow and the leaf stem area at 6 and 12 o'clock. And as Pat mentioned, shoot the arrow from both sides to determine it's index.
