What is the best cane for arrows..?
« on: December 27, 2011, 07:52:00 PM »
Meaning that I want to plant some in my backyard.
So I need to know the scientific species name and where to order some if you know where to get it.

And what about black cane? I have a semi friend that has black cane in his yard and would probably let me cut some if I asked. Is it any good for arrows or worth messing with?

Pseudosasa japonica, Japanese arrow bamboo  , is what the Japanese use.
It's very common as a landscape plant here in the US. Your local nursery should be able to get it for you no problem.

Be very careful of bamboos in your back yard. Some are very invasive and will take over your yard and your neighbors. You would have to surround the planting area with a 4' to 5' deep barrier to prevent it from spreading.
There are a few varieties that only grow in clumps with very limited spread. One in particular that I know makes excellent arrows(and fishing poles)is Bambusa multiplex. Bambusa culms(canes) are round with no sulcus(indention above node), thick walls with a small center hole and internodes that are 12" or more long. Only 2 nodes per arrow.
Bambusa grows to about 15' tall but only spreads to about an 8' to 10' diameter clump. It is cold sensative. I think it is good to hardiness zone 8, maybe a little colder in a protected area.

This place has pseudosasa japonica and its very close to you.  You should have no trouble growing it in southern California.  Most bamboos grow well in southern California.

Roy, unfortunately it will not grow in zone 6. I wish it would, I'm in zone 6.
Mike, you might check with the state Agriculture or invasive plants dept to be sure you can grow any of these invasive bamboos. Cali is pretty tough about such matters. Jap. Arrow Bamboo can be quite invasive.
Being a renewable resource there may already be boos growing in your area that you can harvest arrow shafting from. If you cut only the mature culms(canes) you won't affect the colony and the owner might be willing to let you do it.
