Hill style bows?

I'm gonna be building a hill style BBO and need some info.

 I'm wanting to build a string follow design with a dished grip. Going for around 50-55# @ 29" (I discovered that my draw length grew)

 I don't want to go 70" or anything. I figure 64" tip to tip would be fine

 How long does my riser section need to be.

 And are these style bows built with a gradual width taper from fade to tip or should I keep it straight for a bit before tapering to the tip?

 I plan on gluing it up with 1" of reflex and hope to end up with about an inch of string follow.

 Any advice from the hill style bowyers?

I've been entertaining making a Hill bow recently and doing some research on the proper dimensions.  I have two Hills, and got information from others who make the Hill style.  

Riser lengths are about 15".  Tapers are steep, 0.008"/in on the heavier bows and 0.006"/in on the lighter ones.  That seems to be what gives it the pronounced "D" tiller instead of more circular.  

I find that a 68" bow works well for my 29" draw, but haven't tried shorter.  Most of the Hill guys would highly advise against going as short as 64" for that kind of draw though.  But maybe if you shorten up the riser a bit?  Also, since you shoot a Hill with your heel down, most find their draw lengths shorten up a bit.

I have owned a 66" Hill Tembo and it pulled smooth up to 26". The last two inches to my 28" draw, stacked so hard I had to get rid of it. It didn't help it was a heavy Hill to start with. Speaking from my experience, I'm going to side with canopyboy. One thing you could do is go on the HH bug thread and ask what they think. Good luck!

Build it straight you will have string follow after 100 shots.

Kris I built two BBI's that where 65" long 1 1/8" wide to mid limb and tapered to 1/2" tips. My riser finished around 8" long after sanding and such. I glued in 3" of reflex and only lost 1". I would say glue her up straight and you will have 1 - 1 1/2" of follow.

You're right Pearl.  But a lot of guys are ordering their hills with string follow.  They swear it makes for a sweet shooting and forgiving bow, even if they lose a few fps.  And of course that's what the originals had back in the good ole days anyhow.

Kinda funny ain't it, we always try to build them with as little set as possible and here I am planning to build one with it.

 I always end up with more set than I want cause I still lack a little in the patience area    :D  

 Just cant stand to see one bending and not find out if she's gonna make full draw.

String follow kills wood bows. I cant see a stabiltiy or accuracy advantage with string follow in wood bows. Thats just my .02 cents!

I think it's only a hill-style thing.  In the new glass versions they put it in on purpose.  On the wood versions, you make 'em straight and expect that they'll take an inch or so after they get broke in.

I'm not saying that I've tried it both ways to see if it really makes sense or not.  Just what I've taken away from 600 pages of the hill bug thread.

String follow kills wood bows.

Only if FPS across a chrono,are your priorities.There have been many,who dissagree with that statement above.I guess its a good thing,that many early people,who relied on wood bows,with string follow,didnt get that memo.LOL

Build a few and you will have "first hand" knowledge. They will all shoot good, some maybe a littel better.  Good Luck
