Osage and yellow safty glasses dont mix.

Ive learned something today.I just finishd helping a buddy of mine load and split a load of fire wood.I decided while i was still dirty id ask the neighbor across road if he minded if i cut down a tree that was leaning over his yard.He said sure he was glad to get rid of it.I had ben eyeballyng the tree for quite sometime.Its was only maby 100 feet from my drive way.I was pretty sure it was osage.So I got my chainsaw and safty equipment which included a pair of amber or yellow tinted safty glasses.I headed across the road and did some measuring.I want them 70" long if it worked out.Started cutting.Rite away I noticed the wood did not look yellow.I thought well i must have ben mustakin this must be a black locust(this has happened to me before the bark looks so similar to me).Ive tried to study osage so i can pick it out but with no leaves.So I was kined of bummed out started up the hill to get some more equipment to cut this tree into firewood.I know black locust will make a fine bow but i was expecting beautiful yellow wood.When i took my glasses off i happen to look down at my shirt and i had bright yellow dust on it.So I looked back in the woods and the wood was bright yellow!Put the glasses back on and it was snow white again.!I did this multiple times!With glasses wood was snow white without glasses bright yellow!It even took my eyes a few seconds to adjust to the correct color yellow after removing the glasses.You got me i thought if anything it would make it look more yellow.Anyway i then proceded to cut it to 70" lengths.The large piece you see in the pics is the trunk.Then there are 5 9-10" limbs.And I also saved a bunch of the smaller limbs2.5-3" diameter.Lots of small limbs on them i dont know if they will make a bow or not.Ive never messed with anything that small but they do have large rings.The large one that looks like its forked in the pics is actually two logs.What do you all think is there any bows in this mess.Thanks for your time. Ill trade ypu for a stave of that smaller ringed stuff! It looks pretty good scott. Glad you have ot sealed. I dont like you saying if it was locust you.were going to.chop it up. Of you come accros some locust like that you can send it to me. Im always looking for locust. Nice find.

Dave A couple of years ago a buddy of mine called me and said he had a few hedge logs i could have.I picked it up split it and debarked it.I then learned it was black locust.The bad thing is he cut it 63" long.He didnt know any better he thought I was going to use it for fire wood.I cut some billets out of it and kept a few full length.Its got nice rings but twisty,curvy,wavy grain.I havent done much with it yet its resting in the dry box.Before i knew it was bow wood I made a lot of black locust into fire wood.It makes great firewood!LOL!

Like I said the small diameter pieces have a lot of small branches.Are these all going to be pin knots.If so How deep do they usually run.Thanks Scott

Scott, I'm glad you pulled those safety glasses off before you cut that wood into firewooe!  :eek:
