Urac and Heat bending
« on: January 23, 2012, 11:11:00 AM »
So I have an old bow that I would like to shorten and ad in some reflex.  I have never tried this.

My question is will using a heat gun hurt anything with it already being glued up?

On the question of heating it hot enough to bend, I'd be Leary. Maybe you could add some glued on static recurved tips.

I have heard of folks having success with slight heat bending after using Urac but I've never tried it.

I know guys that splice billets together with it and toss the whole blank in the steam tube for two hours. They say it works great and have never had any come "undone" on them. I dont have the kahonas to try so I bend then glue billets.

I think I'll try it.  I don't plan on flipping them, I just want to give it a little more reflex since I'm going to be cutting a bit off.

I have put quite a bit of dry heat to Urac and it stayed together nut I'm sure there is a point where it will soften up and let go,  I havent found it yet.

I have heated and bent many BBO bows glued up with urac. I keep the heat more on the Osage belly side. But the urac never left go. I tried once to heat the boo up enough to peel it off, never happened, the urac would not let go. I ended up using a screw driver and a hammer, the urac was still like concrete.
