Blue Tape

Is it necessary?

Binghams recommends the "high temp" tape which is blue.  Have never bought the tape from Bingham but have always used the blue stuff from the hardware store just "because".  

The hardware stuff is sold mainly to painters.  It works fine for me but wonder if the plain old beige masking tape would work too.  It would make lay-out lines much easier to see.

Any thoughts on this?

I think the blue tape is better, just use a fine tip black magic marker for your lines.

I have used regular masking tape and it worked ok

Both work fine but I think the blue tape is easier to remove from the limbs after baked.

I use blue at glueup , then remove when it comes out of the box and put regular on. Both seem to stick worse if left on long.

I get the green from Menards. It is not like the 3M green that is super sticky. It comes of good and is less $$

There are actually a wide variety of masking tapes on the market. They have different clean release times, different temperature ranges, and different adhesive levels.

I have been using 2 layers of blue tape. The extra layer lets it come off easier in spots where I get glue on it.  Would like to find some that one layer worked as well.

I use 3M industrial tape from Lowes. Sometimes it is a little difficult to remove but not really bad if you go slow. Cheap tape or tape you have had a long time can be a nightmare.

I use the cheapest tan tape (U-LINE) then take it off with blowdryer heat just lets tape come off with ease. then retape with more cheap tape

Grey, thanks for that link. It is very informative.  My next cook-off is already taped with blue HD product so I'll use it this time around but may start looking at other options.  Especially removing and re-taping.

Call me crazy but I actually used Duct (cloth type not the actual aluminum tape) tape on my fiberglass laminations.  It protects the glass really well, comes off after heat as easy as before heating, and also provides a little "cushion" (especially if used in 2 layers) against the form to take up any tiny irregularities in the form.  Give it a try.

Hey Dat, does not seem crazy at all.  I love seeing new and different ideas put forth.  Usually when it's me putting forth it's a dumb idea but there's a bunch of people on here that are smarter than me!
