ERC ELB Question
« on: March 07, 2012, 03:57:00 PM »
I'm getting closer to a string with this stave. It's over 6' long but only 1 1/4" mid limb to 1/2" tips. It has quite a bit of reflex at this point but it looks like it's going to be a really deep "D" cross section.

My questions are...

#1 Should I sinew this bow to insure less set? I was planning on backing it and wish the stave was a bit wider but this is what I have to work with?

#2 The 1/4 ish sapwood on the stave is perfectly flat aside from just rounding the corners...  is that the way it should be done?

It is my understanding that sinew is best for short bows that will be highly stressed, since it is heavier than wood.  For longer bows it has the potential to add weight without doing much else.  I'm sure others will have more info on this, and if they disagree with me, take their word for it.

I would put rawhide on it before I would do anything else. The quicker the better with ERC. Dean

I'd go with rawhide as well.  Shoot for a lower poundage as well, but thats just me.

save the sinew for a short osage  ;)

Kip, you are getting to fast. I have not had time to make it out to the shop since I finished my trade bow and looks like you have knocked out 2 since then. Love the work you do and thanks for all the pictures you post! Pictures are always better.

This is weird??? When I left the bow to dry overnight from gluing up the rawhide it had a slight amount of reflex. This morning when I check on it the reflex was gone and I have a slight amount of deflex???

How is that possible?  Like I said weird!!!

moisture from the glue and wet rawhide?? does sound wierd
could one not bend in some reflex with a caul and then put the rawhide on- or will that reflex come back as it dries?

Wayne you're right it makes no sense at all!! If anything it should have gained a bit of reflex from the shrinking rawhide and laying back down with the clamp weight on the ends? I just don't get it???

Kip

Enjoying watching yet another bow coming from your shop.  Learning lots from your exploits.  Thank You!

BTW - Thank you also for not dispelling the theory about everyone in Cali running around barefooted.

Getting closer to being done and trying on a hemp wrap and a rest/striker plate I made from an piece of antelope horn...  don't know maybe leather would be better?

I had to shorten the bow as there was a crack on one end that looked suspect.

Looks nice Kip - going to post some video of you shooting?  I know you can do that - I watched you shoot the hackberry.  Hope so!
Enjoy the hunt!  - Mitch
