Ontario Longbow Rendezvous 2008
« on: February 24, 2008, 08:40:00 AM »
As some of you have already figured out, I'm not hosting EOBH this year.

We have a huge number of coyotes here, and this year, a group of wintering hawks. Needless to say, our bunny population is taking the brunt of this    :(

I've decided to something a bit different.
We live in a big province and there are a bunch of us that live to shoot and hunt with longbows.

So....as a lot of you also know, Kelly and I live on a big property in the heart of prime deer country.   :)
I have decided to host the 1st annual OLR, or Ontario Longbow Rendezvous.

The plan is to shoot for the second or third weekend in April, whichever one looks like better weather. I want to beat the blackflies and mosquitoes.
But if interest dictates warmer weather, we can look at later dates. Later in the spring or early summer will mean more bugs and probably no stumpshooting( unless you do it in a bug-suit!)

I have a pretty good range set-up and will add more targets this spring. I am going to build 2 platforms with stairs that will go to 2 treestands on some of our big red pines; these will be at 15 and 25 yards.
They will be easy to get into though, just like walking up your house stairs.   :)

I want to plan a bunch of novelty shots, we have the room, you can shoot to 200 yards on our lawn if you like.
The Cow's steel a$$ will be back again for the brave, some swinging targets, aerial targets, the infamous "any-position" shot will be back.

I also have plans in-works for a relay-obstacle-shoot that will challenge even Harl!   ;)

We have 2 real big beaver ponds, Tom gave me the idea of a 2 man-timed ,canoe-shoot-event with 3 targets on the shore of the ponds, it will be out, the first person shoot, come back and the other person shoot. The event will be scored on both score and time...lol
The names will be drawn to pick your paddling buddy; so there will be no stacking.   :)

We have ample room, camping is available on our property. There is a large firepit to sit around as well and lots of dry wood.

On one of the days, We will all head to the 300 acres behind our house to look for sheds and stumpshoot in the winter yarding areas of the big whitetail herd that lives here.
That should be good for a morning's fun.

We will encourage a big trade blanket, but NO selling of stuff, TRADE only.
Hopefully, with some donation; door prizes will be handed out over the weekend.
I want to make this a pot-luck style event, This will be way too much cooking for Kelly to manage, I think if we all bring some stuff ie: drinks, paper plates, buns, meat, condiments , salads etc..., everbody will eat and drink well.    :)
For those of you who HAVE experienced Kelly's Deli; she will be making a few goodies for us though.

There is a covered barn that we can set-up BBQ's under if we need to.

This is going to be a longbow-ONLY event and will be all for fun and camaraderie.
Like I said above, we live in a HUGE province, This will be good for some of us to get together with old friends, and meet new ones.
    :archer:

This will be happening before the Ontario turkey opener and before the big Chelsea Trad-shoot in Quebec.
Anybody who is interested, post on here and by the time it rolls around, I will have a handle on how many potential longbow shooters there will be here.
any other suggestions are welcome.
This year it is longbow-only, but if it goes well, then maybe next year it will be open to recurves as well. ( I'm sure most of you 'curve shooters have a longbow lurking somewhere, and this is not a competitive event, so dust them off and come have fun)
We'll see how many attend.

We can sleep( if you bring your own cots or sleeping pads) up to 25 throughout the house.
We can easily host some campers and lots of tents on our lot.

So, chime in, let me know what you think, Tom, the paddle shoot was your idea, so guess who is going to be a volunteer-organizer????

Count me in for a "maybe". It will depend on if exams are done by that time and if I have volleyball that weekend. I like that idea with the canoe shoot though  :)
