Fiberglass Problem... HELP

I have never had this happen to me before?????

I had not even bent it back yet.. I was sanding down the excess material from the tips and all the sudden noticed two large gaps in the black glass and wood.  So I put a putty knife in there and peeled off all I could get to peel off.

I am thinking of sanding it down lightly and gluing it back up??? What do you guys think?

I pulled the limb back in the vice and none of the other lams or clear glass seem to be having any issues..

I don't want a blow up, but I don't want to toss out a set of limbs either.

Thoughts?

Did the glass separation happen between the glass itself? or between the glass and the wood?

Glass and wood.  All was sanded with 80 grit like I always do.. and then cleaned twice with acetone.

Ummm, you don't by chance have the tape on the rough side of glass on that pc?

Something goofy.  If even a little Smooth On would have set right, I don't think you could peel it back like that without taking the wood with it.

Haha Kenny... I thought of that... but no.

Something real goofy.  I know, it just peeled right off.

I just don't feel comfortable re-gluing it.  I am just going to build new limbs.  I might keep these and re-glue it for a test subject.

Bradford, I am sorry that happened to you. You make such a beautiful product and you have been cranking them out. If it makes you feel better I would much rather have something like that ruin a limb opposed to last week I marked the centerline of a limb and then traced out my template and when I went to cut it out on the bandsaw I cut about 10" down the centerline before I noticed       ... for now on I will be using red ink for the centerline and black for the lines to cut... good luck and keep us posted if you ever figure out what happened

Was that your last glue joint maybe the glue started to kick. What kind of wood was that it may have been wet.Did the glue all stick to one surface?There are so many things that could happen.I do think 80 grit is to fine but not your problem.This limb will be good practice but not to shoot.

Thanks everyone.. Already have a new limb in the oven.

I noticed that it felt tacky.. So maybe it did not dry 100%... weird.

It was maple.. I have made many lams off that particular piece of maple.

That might be the limb where the oven got turned off after 2 hours.  I went to check the limb and the power went out to my shed.  So I know it baked for 2 hours.. sat for an hour, then I turned it back on for another hour and half or so.

as the saying goes.. S(tuff) happens!

Should have the new limb out of the oven at 3pm then I will throw the second one in tonight as well to help keep me on track.

I had a similar mishap with an experimental one piece longbow last year.  The temperature in the garage was near freezing and somehow the heat box was plugged into the same circuit as the light switch.             The next morning I unplugged the box and headed to work thinking everything was fine; discovered the problem that evening.  It took me a few days to figure out why the glass peeled off both sides       It was .050 glass so I was able to send it through the thickness sander and re-use it on a different bow.  I didn't trust the lams so they found the trash can.

I wish I found it before I shaped it.. Mine is 50 as well.

Sounds like that was the problem

Any chance it wasn't Acetone.  Might it have been Mineral Spirits or something else petroleum based.
