Making the Bingham Drilling Jig work!!

For years now I have had problems with the Bingham drilling jig (BDJ). A few nights ago I thought up a way to fix the problem and here is how I did it.

First off you will need to use the BDJ to drill your riser . Get it as close to center as your BDJ will allow , I will show you how to adjust for error in a second.

Now once your riser is finished with the insert and dowel pin. Mark a centerline on your limb just where the BDJ will go.

 

Now attach the BDJ as you normally would makin sure the 5/16"  hole is as close to center as possible , and try to line up the 1/4" hole as much as possible.

 

Notice that I cover up the holes I am not using so I don't dril in the wrong hole.
I then go to the drill press and only drill the 5/16" hole.

Alright , now if you lay the limb and the riser next to each other you will notice you can place the BDJ on the riser and with a slightly longer 5/16" screw.

 

You can now attach the limb with the BDJ attached to the riser with the longer 5/16" bolt

Now all you have to do is mount you riser and limb so you can put a laser on it.

 

Once you get the laser centered on your riser us the set screws to adjust the alignment of the limb.

Once you get the alignment correct take the limb and the BDJ off together and then drill the 1/4" hole for the dowel pin. You will now have a perfectly aligned limb on your new bow... Repeat for the 2nd limb.

Wayne, The one I use is from Lowes and is their house brand. i think it cost me about $30.

and figured i could get more accurate on my own without the jig- but geuss i'll drag it out and try it!

If for some reason you were to have 2 BDJ's you would be able to align the entire bow in one attempt , then drill the dowel pin holes.

Great idea, I have struggled in the past trying to get things lined up.  I even went to building 2" limbs (riser 1.75") so I had lots of room for measuring errors (and lots limb width to grind).  Can't wait to try this.

Has anyone tried this method for the Bingham Jig? Just curious to find out if the results are better than using the jig per the instructions?

Oh yes.  I have, and it works great.  I ended up making my own jig out of corian and making sure everything was centered, and it works much better.  But this method works great.
