Who uses a toothing plane blade?

When using Urac 185 for gluing, who uses a toothed plane blade to rill the bamboo and hardwood gluing surfaces.  

Where is the best place to obtain a toothed plane (toothing plane?) iron.

I use a reciprocating saw blade, look at Home Depot or Lowes

Yeah or just use a hack saw blade with a lot of teeth per inch.  No need to spend the extra cash.

Do you just run the saw blade down the length of both gluing surfaces using your hands as a tool guide?  How do you obtain enough downward pressure on wood like walnut (or harder) to make any kind of a rill with a relatively "flimsy" hack saw blade?  Just wondering what enough rill depth is?  I wouldn't think you'd want a torn or shredded type of gluing surface, but rather clean cut rills.  Just asking.  Again, I haven't done this myself yet, so happy to take your good advice.

i like the recip saw blade- its nice and stiff- i use it in my hand, but have seen it attached to the edge of a bench with teeth up, and then the wood is pulled over it, i find the hacksaw blades too flexible in my hands.
one point though as you rill the two mating surfaces, and you have the normal runout on the taper, and you glue two light pieces of wood together with urac- you can get "varying thicknesses" of glue line. this is an optical illusion- its merely the rill runout- i glued a HBY bow for my trade bow last year- and the glue line didnt look that good- but i am sure it was( havent heard that its broken yet!!!!    )
i wipe with a clean dry rag, and try and remove any loose fibres- use a tightly woven cotton fabric-no mutton cloth here!!

I've used saw blades, the edges of big files, etc, but nothing works as well as a toothing plane blade that's been ground to a slightly convex shape. Once completed, glue lines are invisible.

I use it, in the plane, for quite a bit of the reduction of the bamboo also.

Love that thing.

Worth every penny.

I use the toothing plane also, and I believe in Dean Torges DVD, he states not to use a saw blade. The toothing plane blade cost about 25 to 30 bucks.

Thanks to all for your good input.  I am a lover of good/fine tools, if it's worth buying, buy it once and make it right.  A toothing plane it will be.  I have Dean's videos and books and am a fan of his methods, craftsmanship and writing.  I am excited about these projects.  I have no less than 4 staves I want to boo back at this time.

Do most of your just air dry your Urac glued/backed bows or do you put them  in a hot box?

What are you all going to be doing about the discontinuation of Urac 185?  Stock up?

Agree with Bowjunkie and Art B.  You can buy the plane blade from Lie Nielsen and make your own plane very easily.

As long as it's 70 degrees in the shop, you can let the glue up sit for 24 hours without using a hot box. I do sometimes put mine in a hot box at about 80 for 24 hours. If I can't get urac I will use smooth on.

The toothing plane makes clean cuts, it has a convex edge on the blade that gives the boo a  slight concave shape, more glue in the center for a better glue joint. A hacksaw blade will not make clean cuts, it will leave little jagged slivers of wood in it's path, not a real good gluing surface my friend. The toothing plane puts straight clean cuts on the boo and belly slat. Have your wife call me and I will convince her into letting you get a new toy:)

I don't think it leaves more glue in the center, Roy, maybe the tiniest little bit. When we clamp it, it flattens out and many of the high points touch the whole way across, but there's always going to be glue in the grooves the toothing iron cut out... from one side to the other, end to end... that way, you'll never starve a joint.
