Thinning Tru-oil????
« on: July 14, 2012, 01:27:00 PM »
I just opened a bottle of Tru-oil that I have had for at least 18 months. It is about twice as thick as a fresh bottle and I was wondering if any of you have thinned Tru-oil and if so what did you use?  Bob  :banghead:

I checked in with the manufacturer recently about drying times.
To keep a new one fresh store upside down.

If you want to thin it use mineral spirits, this will extend drying time.
Was told to put it on thin and wait 12 hours before second coat if dry.
Also sealing oily wood with shellac etc. will help with drying.
Hot humid climate extends drying time.

Thanks Macbow, I'll try mineral spirits.I guess I will only buy one bottle at a time from now on. I put my bows in the bow oven at 100 F.to speed up the drying. Bob

I've tried the boe oven at the same temp. Didn't work out as well as I thought.
I ended up steel wooling the finish off and restarting.
It seems that cooler dry air is better like in A/C.

I have thinned with mineral spirts with good results.  Drying time seems to get longer as coats are added.  Don't try to rush mine though, just go with it.
