Glass bow questions
« on: July 23, 2012, 09:02:00 PM »
I was wondering is 80 grit acceptable to grind lams or should i switch to 60 grit?If your making a multi piece riser Do you bake it separate after you put the pieces together or just let it dry at room temperature and bake it limbs and all at one time(on a one piece build)? and if your putting overlays, grip caps ect.. on after the bow is out of the oven do you have to reheat the riser. Thanks so much for your time,Scott

Scott - Here's my answers to your questions.  I'm no professional and I'm sure others will have different responses....

I use 60 grit to grind lams.

For a multi-piece riser, I bake it just like the whole bow.  And then it gets baked again once the lams and riser are glued up.  No problems so far.

For overlays, I use Kwik-It (super glue sort of stuff from 3 Rivers) because I don't feel like waiting on baking it anymore.  The only bow I've had tip overlays some off of was a recurve in which I made the overlays too thick and they didn't bend with the curve of the limbs as well as they should have.

Hey Scott,

Great meetin you at Mojam!!

60 grit is better, I use 50

On the riser, I just bake it, cut and grind to shape and put it  back in with the bow, I'm guessin if you have pressure on it in the bow form, it won't go anywhere. No failures doing it this way .

On the overlays, you can just let the EA-40 set for 24 hours , or use CA. EA-40 blends better when you sand, but CA is really fast.

I use CA on any I'm keepin, the one I sent with you is glued with it I'm sure.

Rereadin this, I shoulda just said "What JSWEKA said!!"  LOL
Stay sharp, Kenny.

For regular lams I use either 50 or 60 grit. For thin veneers -80-100 grit. On risers I heat cure in my solar oven. Overlays and tips are cured without heat using smooth on- I like the way it blends in better than ca glue.
