Free Pile of Osage - **CLAIMED***
« on: September 03, 2012, 04:39:00 PM »
I spent today clearing out the shop.  The result is a pile of second rate billets and second to third rate staves that I frankly don't want to mess with.  I would guess somewhere around 20 bows worth of wood are here for the taking.  Every piece could make a bow or I wouldn't have kept it in the first place.  I can't ship any of it so you'll have to come get it though.  It's not worth much of a drive but if you are in central Indiana, send me an email and we can work something out.  Sorry no pics.

John I heard the Audubon Society was trying to get cutting osage banned in Indiana!

Heck,,, you're not gonna fall for that load of crap, are ya?

Anyway's it's a good thing you're doing for somone. One mans junk is another mans treasure ya know.

I've been working a 3rd rate stave this past weekend,,, if it don't break I may have a look'r. If it does, nothing wrong with a little practice...

I am a member of the Audobon Society and therefore will never let that pass Joe  :)   I have a couple guys interested in coming by and taking a look.  Hopefully it'll be worth their effort.  These are definitely pieces that I would have tackled in the past and surely will in the future.  But I have lots of access and no real problem getting wood when I need it.  I am very lucky that way, I know.  PLus I have at least 30 bows in some stage of completion under my bench.  My promise is to get them all done before I go for anything else.

Collecting bow wood is addicting isn't it?  I'm thinking about offering my Dad a storage fee for part of his garage.  I'd spend all next year cutting and splitting osage.  I could be set for life in one year I think.

Bout 6-7 years back I pulled a reject stave off a pile that the "Okie Boys" left behind at Mojam.
Made two bows out of that one stave...  :)
Ya never know what you might find. Good of you to share John. I hope your back has gotten better.

It is? From the limited view offered by that picture, I see several I'd have burned. On the other hand, I guess even only a couple good osage splits consitutes a nice pile  :)

"nlester" came up and introduced himself this weekend.  He went back with a little bit of osage too.  It was a pleasure nathan.  I hope you find some value in the wood.

John,
It was nice meeting you.  I appreciate the wood and the lesson.  Already started prep work for my 1st set of billets.  Thanks again.
