Bamboo flooring
« on: October 01, 2012, 08:34:00 PM »
So I'm thinking about buying some bamboo flooring to grind my own lams.  Those of you that have used bamboo flooring for lams - Do you think this stuff would be good (check out the link)?

I'm still undecided whether to buy this stuff or stick with good old reliable Kenny for lams (at least I know they'll be good).

John, the flooring in the link you provided is not good for lams. It's made up of compressed sawdust (like mdf) with a layer of boo on top to look good. When you buy floor boards, look at the ends to see what it's made of. You can easily tell if the board is all bamboo. You want it to be all vertical laminated boo throughout the board.
The local big box store near my home sells individual boards as samples, so I usually just get one or two at a time.
I hope this helps.
Dave.

Good catch guys.  That stuff would have really ticked me off if I would have ordered it.  Here's the link I should have posted.

The vertical bamboo I buy is 76" long and 5/8 thick, no joints in the lams. It can be bought in widths of 3 1/2 or 4 1/2.

Yeah, you can't beat Kenny's quality and customer service.  I'm certainly not cranking out bows in a production mode, so I am wondering if it's worth making my own.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Kenny is the man when it comes to service and a quality product. If you only build a few bows then grinding your own lams would not be cost effective.
