2 piece suggestions?
« on: October 29, 2012, 03:34:00 PM »
I have a couple osage billets coming. Haven't worked any with osage but I am really fired up about getting these billets and haveing a go at.
I am wanting to build me a two piece takedown and I have plenty of hickory billets to practice on before I tackle the osage.

I've looked at 3 Rivers takedown sleeves and see they have two sizes. If I order from them which size do ya'll recommend?

Is there any other place to get them, even different systems that ya'll might think are better.

I've seen the thread on the rawhide sleeve and don't think I want to go that route.

Throw the suggestions and opinions out there and let's see what we can up with.
PS, I did search to see what I could I find and didn't come up with a whole lot.

Thanks,
John

Both Kustom King and Pine Hollow sell the take down sleeves.  I would go with the large one.  Price does not vary much.  There are several 2 piece build alongs on the site.  Check out Broketooth and his 2 piece.
I followed this one to do mine.  Good luck.
Can't wait to see the finished bow.

I've done a couple bows with those steel/brass sleeves.  I use the larger one just because I make hunting weight (big game) bows right now and want full size handles.  For light bows I might try the smaller.

A couple of pointers, if I may?: The sleeve system is made up of two small metal sleeves that slide into a longer steel sleeve.  They are a tight fit, sometimes very tight.  You do not want the inner, smaller sleeves to buldge at all so consider that when making the wood fit inside those smaller sleeves.
Round the edges of the inner sleeve(s) so they enter into the larger sleeve smoothly.  Use wax as a lubricant so the two pieces slide together more easily.  Without wax, and if buldging, those sleeves can be very difficult to get apart if you force them together.
Last point...When you taper the limbs down into the sleeve don't remove wood so that there is a smooth taper right into the smaller, inner sleeve.  You want the wood to taper down and mate up flush with the outer, larger sleeve.
Or even more than flush because you will cover the steel with leather and you want the limb to taper down flush with the widest point of the handle, not the inner sleeve or you'll see that gap between the leather handle and the wood.

Got my osage in. I looked it over and don't know what in the world to do with it. I'll have to start a new thread post pics to get some advice.
