Osage Selfbow
« on: November 22, 2012, 03:11:00 PM »
I finished this one a while ago but never posted it because of the lack of a good camera.  Anyway, here are some more cell phone pics.

The bow itself is osage with a few sapwood rings left on for looks.  The tips overlays are zebrawood, and the handle wrap is hemp courage soaked in ca glue.

The bow is 48in. Ntn and pulls 23@23. I pulled it back pretty far to insure its safety for kids. There is a nice crack in one limb, but it is not a big deal.

I like how you kept some sapwood on that Dave. Did you chase the sapwood ring down the same as heart wood?

In other words, this bow came out too light for you? LOL
I've got a Christmas present for a 11 yr old who will be just as happy come Christmas morning. All bamboo limbs, desert camo riser, just waiting for finish, but about 20# shy of what I wanted. Kids bow nontheless. He will be happy to get it.

Nice!  I especially like the handle shape and hemp wrap.

Thanks Paul. Yes I always chase rings on selfbows, excepting the yew bow in working on but I still did the best I could.  I only left it this time because I like the looks a bit better.

Chris, luckily for me I ha e been able to save any lightweight bows with bamboo... Or I break em. I can normally get the weight back to 40+ pounds at 26. Those are the ones that go to older kids and women. ( No offense Bona       ) Kids bows start as kids bows. I try to make one for every to or three I make. I've got enough small pieces of wood hanging around sometimes.

Thanks Tim. That was my first time. It wasn't very difficult and has pretty good grip.
