BBO with flipped tips???
« on: December 01, 2012, 09:10:00 PM »
This is my first attempt with Osage and flipping tips, so I've run into a problem and am looking for some suggestions. I flipped both of the tips and have now discovered that the boo won't bend the other way. Duh... So now what? Can I just cut the boo to fit up to the curves? The tips shouldn't be bending right? Is the backing needed where the bends start?

Not understanding. Did you plane the belly of the boo to a flat surface?, sounds like you didn't. Ya have pictures?

Yes, I planed it flat. It is nice and thin, but I don't think it will make the bend on the flipped tips? I will take a few pics.

I haven't measured it, but eyeballing it looks like it is 1/8" or 3/16" at the center of the crown. (thickest place)

The actual tips of the boo aren't that thick. They are paper thin at the tip and probably 1/16" thick in front of that first node, or whatever you call it.

Boo is pretty flexible.  I would think that it would lay down in there.  I've never tried one like that though.  Good ol Roy should be who you listen to.  I'm interested in seeing how it comes out though good luck.

It is real flexible the other way. Not so much back the way I need it to go now. I've stopped on it until tomorrow afternoon.

Have you tried heating the boo before you bend it?
You could form it to the recurve bend before glue up.

I havent tried anything yet. I sorta looked at it, tried to press it in place, and then figured I'd better run it by the Cartel here to see what I needed to do.  :)

To be honest Mitch, I have never tried to put boo on tips that reflexed. Heat would make it bend easier like Pat said.  Do you have a scrap piece of boo to expeirment with first?

I concur with heating the bamboo. As thin as it is, it shouldn't take long to get hot enough. You want it just hot enough that you can't hold your hand on it.

Bamboo that thin will get hot quickly, but it will cool quickly too, so have everything you need ready to go and make the bend without wasting any time.

I would heat it, press it down into the recurve, hold it there with spring clamps, and let it cool. Leave the first one clamped in place while you do the second. After they're both cooled, remove, glue the whole works, and clamp it up.

I have found that bamboo tends to cup towards the outside when it's heated,(the side that will be the back of the bow), so that the belly side may be a little rounded. Just flatten it back down by sanding after it has cooled.

I've bent it now and am about to glue it up here in a few minutes. Thanks for all the help. The boo bent over nicely.

I'm glad it's doing what you want. If you were to watch Dean Torge's DVD (It's worth it just for all the info he shares) You see him do a BBO recurve with pretty sweeping curves. It seemed to work without incident.
