one question...

Good day all, I was wondering if yellow cedar would be good for lams on a Hill style bow. I know red cedar is supposed to be good, what do you think??
Ok, wile I'm here what about sitka spruce?
Thank you
Cheers
David

I'm sure they both would work, and be pretty, and make a bow, but I don't think they are high performance materials.

Not even the red cedar that Dave Johnson use for his Hill style bows??
I know bamboo would be better, but maybe worth a try?!?!

We're just basically talking veneer here, so it's whatever you want! I have seen red cedar on hill style bows and it's purty!

Red ceder makes a fine longbow if its glass backed and I would use maple or bamboo for the core. Sitka spruce makes a very fast bow but by itself won't hold up over the years. Bob

Ok, good info here thank you. I was in the impression that Dave actually uses red cedar all the way true, on a mirthyl riser??
here what he says on his web site: "My cedar longbows all have three laminations of cedar with Bo-Tuff fiberglass on the back and belly. I like to use myrtle wood for the riser material..."
Woud the sitka old if it is glass back and belly ?
Never made a bow but might be interested to try out one day....
Cheers
