Justin they are river cane.
Charles, these are cut from my good spot I mentioned a couple months ago. I'm drying you some dandies.
I am also trying to straighten some a little differently than I usually do it. I cut these yesterday and have six in the house straightening a little each day till they are dry. We'll see?

David, nice haul. That looks more like switch cane(A. tecta) to me. River cane is usually taller, thinner walls and a very pronounced nodes and sulcus(indentation above the node). IMO, switch cane makes a better shaft than river cane.

Man I wish I had access to cane like that. All I have access to is yellow groove bamboo and that doesn't seem to work for arrows very well. Can make a mean spear with it though. Maybe a big warbow could shoot them.

I sure hope it's switch cane:)
David does that cane have real short depressions above the nodes, like 1/4 inch long and not very deep?

I hit my cane patch up today and left with 48 shafts. I wish mine was switch cane.

Pat, i believe you are right. It is switch cane. It has very thick walls and is not very tall. I didn't know there was a difference. I heard my dad call it switch cane all my life. I just thought he had other reasons for calling it that! :D
I went back to the patch again this afternoon and cut another 5-6 dozen.
I try to cut mine 3/8 to 7/16 in diameter. They shrink when they dry. I try to find those that have 9-10 inches between the nodes.

Kenny, were you that bad? I know I was but the species did survive.
You should see all the deer sign around the cane patch. I think I found a new place to hunt this fall.

Paul, we have some dogwood around here too. I have to wait till they put on leaves and bloom so I can tell them apart form the sassafras shoots.
