how to clean lams?

This is probably a dumb question,but when they handed out stupid,I got my fair share.On a glass bow how do you guys clean your lams?On one tape I have they say to wipe down with acidtone before applying glue,and another DVD said to dry wipe with a paper towel.   :confused:

I always just use fresh lams.

I've heard the wipe with acetone thing, but have heard about equal number say it brings oil to the surface.

I used to use a brass brush on stuff like bocote, but anymore, I just glue em after blowing any dust off with clean air...

I don't care much for the idea of wiping with paper towels, seems like you would have a lot of paper to pick out of em.

Be careful handling the lams and glass, so you don't get any fingerprints on em. Oil from your skin could cause a prob also.

None of the above. A stiff wire brush then compressed air. Be sure your air system is free of moisture.

Denatured alcohol.

I've used denatured alcohol before with great success.  Don't use the paper towels - you'll have bits of it in your glue joint.  If you don't have compressed air (like me), then use an old t-shirt if you have to wipe it with anything, and then go real light so you don't catch splinters or fibers from the shirt.

If you use denatured alcohol, use the the high test stuff (80-90%). Get a big bottle too as it is great for cleaning up your arrows prior to fletching & cresting.  Many grocery stores just have low test (50%).

For glue ups I have cleaned the lams with Acetone, denatured alcohol, a small scrub brush, whisk broom, dust collector, or air nozzle.  I have read of people using all of these methods with success, so I tried them all.  They all work. My favorite to use is denatured alcohol, it evaporates quickly and doesn't over power you with the smell. It's the last thing I do after laying them out ready fit the glue.  I am always confident the oils, tape residue, fiber prints, and dust is are gone.
