Binghams Versamid epoxy
« on: March 21, 2013, 12:51:00 AM »
Anyone have experience with this? I bought some to use on glass bows and can't seem to get it to work as well as smooth on. I've used it at room temp and heated a bit in the hot box. It just doesn't seem to fill as well as smooth on, or spread/flow as well. Any suggestions?

Yea, yea. I prob will very soon. I'd really like to be able to use this up first, though. Hate wasting $$

I've used it in the past and had the same results. Smooth-On is like the gold standard and all else just comes in second at best.

That's what I thought too, Troy. Maybe I'll just use this for risers and get smooth on for lam glue ups.

This stuff doesn't cure out at low/no heat.  If I remember right it said 180degrees.  I tried it on an overlay and it just got gummy under the lamps.

I tried it again with heat strips and it got hard but the glue buggers were filled with frothy bubbles.

Two strikes and I threw it out.

Definetly not as user friendly as smooth on.  I remember when Binghams only stocked the Epon Versamid.  Never had to much luck usuing clear glass with it but I still have a couple of bows that were put together with it back in the eighties and they are still going strong.  It is very thin and messy compared with smooth on.

I buit a few bows with it[versimid]--and they are still together--buuut...as soon as I tried it with clear glass I had bubbles-then another had bubbles--It was then that I had too assume the several bows I made with brown and black glass have the same bubbles-although not visible--it kind of ticked me off---I bit the bullet-and bought smooth-on and have NOT had another bubble [knocking on wood right now!]
my advice-chuck that stuff-and forget about it!!
buy some smooth-on
