Bow finish
« on: May 05, 2013, 11:46:00 AM »
My trade bow is almost done and needs only final finishing. I have a question though. I sprayed on several coats of shellac and I want to dull down the shine a bit with a coat of spray minwax poly. Do I need to scuff the shellac first or will it go on as is? Will shellac or poly cause water based acrylic artists ink to smudge?
Thanks.
Dave.

A light sanding will help with adhesion.  Maybe 100 grit.

I would test the application on the inks before brushing or rubbing on poly or shellac.  A light spray poly or shellac should not cause a problem.

Thanks John. The test piece is drying now and I'll try the poly on it when it's ready.
I went out and bought some art acryilic inks. They're so much better than the paint pens I was using before.

I have never had acrylic inks run with Tru-oil  poly or shellac.

I sprayed my test piece and it worked out. From now on it's acrylics for me.
