I'm with pat on this one. Maple and white oak are only marginal in compression strength, and although it CAN work, I think it's a waste of bamboo frankly, bamboo is not free after all.
I'd go for Ipe first, if not Osage, if not:
bulletwood (massaranduba), cumaru (brazilian teak), jatoba(brazilian cherry), bubinga, etc etc. Alot of the tropical woods are stronger than maple or white oak in compression. Ipe, Osage and Massaranduba would be my top 3.
If you already bought the oak use it for backing strips ... if you bought the maple use it for cores in a tri lam between a backing strip and a belly lam.
If you're looking for osage for belly lams, Kenny M (sponser on here) may be able to help.
Also, Troy Breeding (sponsor on here)was selling black locust boards for backing recently for a fair price (not the best for compression strength but I think should be better than maple or white oak)
Lastly, Tenbrook (sponsor on here)sells ipe boards for bamboo backing.
