Riser Weight - Bow Options?
« on: February 28, 2008, 01:38:00 PM »
I'm starting the search for a new takedown recurve. The standard against which I compare most is my BW PMA Ironwood. This bow is in my "keeper" stable and I'll never get rid of it. But....... though I appreciate the riser mass and weight and all that can mean for a stable consistent shot, I don't like it for a carrying around hunting bow. I don't hunt from treestands, so there is lots of walking when I'm hunting.

What I'm curious about is your experience with the likes of Schafer Silvertip TD's or Robertson Falcons or any others you may have tried. I'd like to hear how you would compare the weight of the bows with the BW PMA or even how would a PSA compare. I'm looking for that happy medium in stable riser weight and carry-ability.

Thanks,
Steve

I am no longer a subscriber to the 'heavy riser theory'-even quit using a bow quiver. Check out the ACS CX-it is a 3 piece R/D-fast, smooth, quiet and well balanced. No need for any additional riser mass at all.

A Zipper with the curly maple riser is light to carry.

The PMAV I owned was noticably heavier than the PSA's I've owned.  The Autumn Oak and Graybark were the lightest.  Pretty much all my other bows have been 1 pieces...Mike

Robertsons are what I would call medium weight; I prefer using a quiver on them to add a bit.  They are smooth and good shooters, but probably slower than what you have.  Morrisons are even lighter, and are good shooters.  They are probably a better choice if you are really looking to lighten up.

Robertson a quite a bit lighter than the Widows and definitely quicker than the Widows, the Schafers with dymonwood are lighter than Widows and comparable in speed. If ya like a little bigger grip the Robertson is very nice. I have owned them all and still have my Schafer one-piece. The thing with the Robertson and the Schafer is that ya can make them a bit heavier or lighter by the choice of riser woods. I jut ordered a new custom and had a lot of purpleheart put in the riser to add mass weight. If ya want light to carry and a sweet shooter, look at the RER Arroyo, it is a one-piece and very lihgt in the hand with absolutly no hand shock. Shawn

Shawn hit an excellent point, your choice of riser woods can make a huge difference in the same bow.
