Longbow riser drilling depth 3 piece takedown
« on: July 12, 2013, 07:54:00 PM »
I'm using stuff from binghams on a longbow riser. How deep are you drilling your pilot 2 sided bolt/screw holes? Also, how deep do you use the binghams bit that puts the threads into the wood...like how high up on the bit should I put masking tape?

Again, this is all the standard stuff from binghams. Thanks

If you are going to use a bottoming tap after the starting tap (a good idea)then drill your hole as deep as the insert is long not counting the tapered part of the drill bit. You want the tapered part of the hole to be below the insert.

A picture is worth a thousand word. Go get a t handle wrench for your tap they're like 7 bucks at menards.

I'm assuming you r using the jig from binghams

I usually drill 1" down, even though the insert is 3/4", the end of the tap is slightly tapered and you have to go up the shank a little to get a full cut. I find I can go about 3/4 the way down and then have to back it out to get the shavings that accumulate at the bottom out. Screw it back down and you'll feel the resistance when it hits bottom.
I clean the insert with a little denatured alcohol or acetone to get off any residual cutting oil and do a dry run so I know it will go smooth when I go to glue it in. Hope that helps.

How do you get it back out after a dry run? Any tips for gluing?

I just use an easy out to get them out. For glueing them in I put a little epoxy on the threads.

If you're using a bottom tap (a tap that cuts full threads all the way to the bottom of the tap hole) then you wanna drill it as crooked stic said) For Binghams inserts I think that 3/4" or 7/8".

I haven't bothered with the bottom tap because my risers have had plenty of meat to drill into. I just drill the hole 1 1/4" deep and tap with a standard tap until it bottoms out, that leaves more than enough thread to get the insert in.

Some bowyers drill right through the riser, I think the pinnacle riser is like that. So that's always an option.

Good luck.

Im using the binghams tap which is flat on the bottom does not cut threads the whole way.

Doesnt the easy out damage the insert threads?

You can put a nut on the bolt to lock it to the bolt too. Then just back the bolt out....
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Thanks for the help. I got the inserts in, no problem. The alignment pins are a pain right now since I didn't make the limbs and I am trying to match them onto this riser. My jig is about .002 different, but that's enough!

Anyway, should still get it worked out soon. Thanks!
