Pecan, is it good enough?
« on: July 14, 2013, 10:21:00 PM »
Felled a pecan tree at my mom's house. Have an 8 foot log about 2 foot in diameter and after buying so many boards to make kids bows just wondered if it's worth the time and money to have it cut into boards for future bows. I realize pecan is in the hickory family so would it work for low poundage bows or maybe use it for backing red oak? Or maybe just use it for the smoker.....
What's yall's experience with pecan?  :archer:

Pecan makes great bows. Lumberyards sell pecan and other hickories under the same label so if you've made some hickory board bows already then theres a pretty good chance you've already used pecan and didnt know it. You could just peel the bark and split it instead of getting it sawn up but if its 2 feet in diameter you're gonna need quite a few wedges. Either way they will make great hunting weight bows. It does make great smoking wood too but I would try to get bows from it if it were me.

What okie said x2.

you'll probably end up with some offcuts and ends you can use for smoking anyway.

I have built a number of bows from pecan/hickory and the moisture problem was always a drawback. It would be worth the expense of having it sawed, then let it dry naturally. Could also cook a few ribs along the way. No way to loose on a deal like that.
