Newbie Needs A Little Help
« on: August 21, 2013, 06:48:00 PM »
Hi all!!  Been reading this site for a few weeks trying to gather as much info as possible...tons of good stuff here!  I am a compound guy looking to make the switch to traditional. I've decided to follow the oak board pyramid bow build along and had a few questions:
1) I plan on using a silk backing for added protection (being first bow and all) and was wondering how easy it is to paint or stain the silk backing...looking to add some design to the finished bow
2) Will the boards in the attached pictures work for this bow?

Thanks

Looks pretty good.
Just realize oak board bows are, very good for learning the basics.
The silk or any cloth backing is easy to decorate. But you have to build the bow first. The pyramid design has the best chance in my opinion. Make it plenty long.

I like the cross section of the grain, quarter sawn, fairly equal early to late growth. ON the long picture, down on the right side about where the grain fades into the background it looks like the grain may slide off the side of the board. Depending on layout it could be an issue. Check 4estTrekkers bow build here on this site, you should get a shooter without the backing. Good luck.
