Bamboo Backed Osage Blank
« on: August 27, 2013, 11:39:00 PM »
Where can I find a quality bamboo backed osage blank? I would prefer a r/d but I wouldn't mind a different design.

Thanks,

Scott

Not sure, but honestly, gluing the blank is fairly easy in comparison to tillering/shaping a bow ...

can be done with innertubes as clamps, or using plain c clamps or metal spring clamps ...

I don't know who sells osage boards ... maybe Mike Yancey at Pine Hollow Longbows ...

He might be able to hook you up with the blank too but dont quote me on it. I vaguely remember him having some or other typoe of pre-glued blank.

Yep, Mike can fix you up. Pretty good prices, too!
Good luck.

I was looking for one that was already cut out. I don't have a bandsaw and I'm not skilled with a copping saw. But I can tiller a bow so Just need something glued up and cut out.

Dryad used to sell one but that was a while ago.

Yeah, it would be really tough to do with just a hand saw.  Do you have a table saw?  That works well, too.

I don't have any power saws at all. My only power tools are a benchtop belt sander, and an electric hand planer. I use the hand planer to taper the sides of the limbs and to pre-taper the belly a little before gluing the handle on ... (it gets in teh way of the hand planer)

Then it's off to the belt sander for tillering ...

Amazed that you make those fine wood lam bows without any power saws, Ben.  I don't have a bandsaw (yet) but I get a lot of use out of my table saw and hand held jig saw.  Neat to know that you don't have to have a shop full of power tools to make great bows.

Sounds like Roy's going to set Scott up with a blank.  Way to go Roy, guess you're not such a bad guy after all.     :goldtooth:
