Hackberry backed IPE
« on: September 26, 2013, 09:55:00 PM »
Ok I have a good piece of IPE and I have a very straight grained piece of Hackberry. So I was thinking of putting them together.

I will get some picks up I have it cut and thinned and will glue it up tomorrow if I get a chance. I will try and get some pics up as I build it. I also have a HBH glued up.

Hackberry is pretty decent in tensile strength, but not very elastic at all. Hickory, w oak or maple would be better In my opinion.

I have a w oak and a hickory strip but I have not seen any Hackberry backed bows so I am going to give it a try. Who knows I might have the new hot combo on my hands.

Ok here are a few pics.

This it a close up of the IPE and Hackberry

Here now the two are all clamped up.

I am going to cut it down to 64" and have glued in about 1.75" of deflex.

I am thinking of gluing together some Hackberry and either some IPE strips or Osage strips to make a laminate handle to glue on to the bow.

Looks like a good start Kelly. Should be a stout bow when it's finished.

Well I took the clamps off this morning and she kept about an 1" of deflex. I will get a pic up a bit later.

Thanks Red and Paul.

Ok here is a pic. I have it cut down to 64" long. I am planning on glue that piece that I cut off the end on as the handle.

I do have a question.

Can I keep my handle 4" and my fades 1.5" for a total 7" or should the fades be a bit longer on a glued on handle riser?

That's fine Kelly. I use 1.5" fades on almost all my bows.

Thanks Pearl I will cut that piece down to 7" later and get it glued on for the handle and fades.
