Need some advice on my mess up
« on: October 27, 2013, 04:16:00 PM »
Ok I made up my limbs this weekend I had my form all measured up for the length I needed I have a 16 in riser and I wanted a 58" takedown recurve at around 65# . I actually have 5 different risers made up because I was kinda worried about doing the limbs so I kept putting them off. My first mistake was they came out way to thick like .275 but they look awesome I think for my first ones. But I am going to sand them down on the sides and the belly and also trap them. For some reason I was worried about them not being strong enough now I know I was way wrong. The second problem is the worst part i have the Bingham plans and I used the limb pattern for the 58 " but didn't think about it until after that my riser is 16" so my bow is about 54" any advise I don't really want to just give up because they came out really nice

Don't see much of a solution.
You can finish up the short combo see what you end up with.
If it is just too short for you either build a longer riser or longer limbs.

Yeah build a longer riser. On next set of limbs go thinner or make them longer.

I would love to have a now that compact I just hope I can make it manageable I was thinking of changing the angle of the limbs to. Does any one know of a good place to order shorter strings. Most places I've looked only sell 58"

There are several sponsors here that make and sell strings.
Best scenario is to learn to make your own.

Been doing that for 40 plus years. Has really come in handy.

you can go with progressively finer grits, from 150,220,320,and 400 usually quite enough for glass and wood, unless you want to get into automotive paint finish sandpapers which are finer. I stop with 400 grit myself.

How much weight do you need to bring it down to your target weight?  What thickness glass did you use? You can easily sand .010 off of both back and belly without compromising your bow.  you can drop weight pretty quick on a recurve.  400 grit and a few coats of finish and you'll never know you sanded.  You want to sand it a little anyway to prep it to spray.

What do you finish your limbs with after they are sanded I've got it down enough I can pull it all the way it's just still really strong for a takedown I don't have a scale to measure it yet

I recently refinished one and I sealed the sides of the limbs and the riser (it was a one piece) with superglue, sanded it back and sprayed it with minwaz spray lacquer ... came out nice and fairly idiot proof.
