hickory in a glass bow?
« on: December 11, 2013, 10:42:00 PM »
getting ready to build a 64" r/d longbow. my first with grinding my own lams. I am going to use 3 .oo1 tapers. I was thinking of using black walnut back and belly hickory for the core.i also have maple, cherry and ipe. what do you think would make a good combination.

Maple may be your better core choice. Hickory is stiff and a bit heavier than maple. Both will work fine though. Try to use edge grain for the core lams to make it more stiff. One noted bowyer said that edge grain hickory cast heavier arrows well.

I have always been fond of Black Walnut, it is lighter than some other woods.  If using clear glass I would for sure choose it over the others.  Maple is time proven and while it may have equals none are better.  I don't think I would choose ipe, very heavy.  If using colored glass maple or cherry with a center lam of black walnut would look nice.  Keep in mind the opinions expressed are mine and your mileage may differ.  That is one of the things that make it fun.  Forgot about hickory can't say personally having never used it but I know a bunch of others have had success with it.

That would work fine, it would give you a cool light stripe when viewed from the side. I'd keep the hickory thin.  Walnut make for a fast bow.

I would think Ipe is awfully heavy for lams. All the rest work good. You don't see to many built with cherry, but I've had good luch with it, and it's pretty under glass.
