Fletching
« on: December 28, 2013, 11:31:00 AM »
Hello all,
This is my first post here and I hope it is in the correct area. I have been shooting biws and biwhunting for roughly 30 years now. I ha e went from a black fiberglass Bear Recurve I found to compounds, to a custom David Miller Longbow and then a mix ofthe longbow and compounds.
I started out fletching my own arrows around 13-14 year of age but they were for compounds. The arrows worked but I was far from patient enough to make them all perfect. As time went on I found it easier and quicker to buy arrows already fletched.
My last 3 dozen arrows that I bought were fletched by Vics Archery in Grand Rapids MI when they were still open in the early 2000s. They are Easton Legacy arrows and appear to be a straight fletch slightly offset to the right. I am right handed and shoot a right handed Miller Longbow. I have a JoJan 6 place multifletching jig with right helical clamps and I nedd to refletch some of the Easton Legacy arrows I have. Will the right helical clamps be ok shooting a right handed bow? When I refletch the arrows I will strip even the good arrows and refletch them so they are all the same.
     Any help is appreciated!

Should work just fine - get to fletching.
Enjoy the hunt!  - Mitch

Yes the right helical clamp will be fine, as long as your feathers are right wing feathers. Left wing feathers need a left helical clamp. The right or left helical doesn't matter whether you shoot left or right handed. But some guys like to use one or the other to keep the front of the feather away from their shooting hand. After the feathers are in place, put a small dab of glue on the very front end of each feather.

The only time I've ever had problems with right fletch on a right handed bow was because my jig puts them on almost cock feather up, and I was getting a little shelf contact, but switching to shooting cock feather in instead of out fixed it. This was with arrows with glued on nocks so I couldn't rotate to tune. never had any real problems.

Ben has  a point also on cock feather pointing inward. Actually the feathers should clear the shelf / side plate because of archers paradox. But sometimes things happen that they don't, so tuning is required.
