Actionwood veneers to dry?
« on: February 06, 2014, 07:20:00 PM »
I can't be the only one to experience this with action wood. I've had a couple lams sitting around waiting on me to make them into a bow and they seem to be getting to dry, got a little wave to them.

How did you guys tackle this issue? Did you trash them or use them as is. I thought about getting a water bottle and misting them and setting something heavy on them to flatten them back out. I don't have a moisture meter to check the level or I could give a bit more info.

I haven't had this issue with natural wood lams but I usually cut them and use them pretty quickly.

Thanks,
Cory

I have had the same problem in the past.  Now I either use them within a few days after they arrive or clamp them under a heavy piece of wood to keep them flat until used.  The cupped actionwood lams have worked fine, they just soak up a lot of Smooth-On. It is hard to spread the Smooth-On evenly, you end up with excess glue in the cupped portions of the lams.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

Yep, sometimes they will dry out and cup. Have had some bocote lams do that also.  The worst I've seen was my bro's dyed curly maple. We used water per instructions and they were horrible.

Couple days in the hotbox between 2 boards made em work ok....

And the bow is 5 or 6 years old and showing no ill effects.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Cool thanks gents I will go ahead and use them as is. I will put the pressure on slow and let the glue work it's way out slowly so I don't rip anything with the extra glue and pressure.

I had some flat grain zebra veneers once that I left on my bench. When I got back to them they were as wavy as potato chips. Now I at least lay something on them to keep them from warping.

Those pink lams you sent me a while back did the same thing.  It took me a little bit to get to them and they had warped.  I just used a little extra glue and they came out great.  I figured next time it's best to keep them under wraps until ready to use.  I've actually had it happen to thinner maple lams and a pair of thin walnut lams since.  I just had them sitting on the bench waiting for me to finish the riser and they warped a bit.
