Help in michigan
« on: March 14, 2014, 07:38:00 AM »
I moved to michigan 6 months ago, don't ask why. Anyway, I brought an Osage stave I have had for years and need someone's help in turning it into a bow.  Heck I think it can be a bow. It's 72" pretty straight an has a couple thick growth rings about 3 rings down from the back.  I ment to bring it to kalamazoo but the weather turned me back.  I live in Redford if someone would be kind enough to want to give me a class or just get me started.

First you need to take it down to one ring, others will come forward I'm not very good at explaining things.

Ranger 3 is right on, take it down to one heartwood growth ring. There are lots of good youtube videos on chasing rings, and on building osage bows.

Watch them, and post pictured of progress here and you'l get the advice you need.

Good luck!

Bring it to the Marshall Primitive Rendevous and you'll get all the help and knowledge you'll need....FREE. Its on Memorial Weekend. Check out Wilder Creek Conservation Clubs web site for details. I highly suggest it.

Cut it up for fire wood and buy some good board material. You'll never look back...  :wavey:

Now that is funny! That way he can break 2 out of 3 boards and still get one to shoot.

Thanks pearl drums, I've seen some of your bows, they are awesome.  I think I will take you up on the memorial weekend festivities.

I is just kidding.....I agree Roy the work you guys do with raw material is art.  Just don't have the patience for it right now. Have roughed out a few that took some time and some work, I just found it extremely frustrating when they broke. Took one look at the draw knife hung it up and there it sits...
But with a board I have less time and much less effort by the time I get the short string on it, like 2-3 hours including the time it took me to drive to the lumber yard.
Actually I will probably go out wood hunting next week now that the nice weather is happening.
Untill then it's seasoning time.

But do you realize you just caused Pearly Boy to have a restless sleepless night?  And in the morning he will be like a bear with a sore ass? And he will be phone texting me, crying his eyes out..? And I will have to calm him down.. LOL
