Need some lam advice
« on: March 18, 2014, 09:19:00 PM »
Bought my grand daughter an Easton youth bow it's a take down with some kind of plastic limbs. Max's out at 20# @ 26", she draws normally to 24" but can pull it to 26 with almost no effort. The limbs are so soft as to provide no challenge. Any advice to stiffen the limbs? I have my doubts that a resin would adhere to the plastic. I thought about a wood lam with contact cement. I have no experience modifying a bow though so toss me some ideas.
Thanks
Steve

not ideal- and not very primitive- but certinally quite trad,
but check out making some pvc bows- check out u-tube
tons of info- super cheap- a bow for just a few dollars- kids can paint them and have fun building their own bow with grampa!

but to answer your question- i dont think anything would stick to the plastic, maybe you could pike the bow- would add some.

sorry, in other words cut an inch off either end, and re fashion string nocks- thats if the bow is not too short already!

I vote with fujimo.  I build some PVC bows as well.  A simple flatbow or recurve is simple and very inexpensive to make.

Drop me an email and I can give you some pointers.

Yeah I'd tend to agree with both of Wayne's suggestions.

Unless you want to get into making a new wood or fiberglass bow from scratch, PVC bow and/or piking the current bow might be the way to go.

If its the bow I'm thinking of..it 52" long and a takedown recurve. Is she in an archery program at school like JOAD or 4-H ?

Yes, it's the TD recurve. Easton says the limbs are glass reinforced phenolic resin. Too bad they don't offer optional limb upgrades. She's not in any program yet, just shoots with me. I just ordered some Redline 6.4gpi arrows to set up for her. All my others are too heavy. I may just break down and buy another bow. This thing is like a noodle.  Thanks to all for the advice.

Hey just a thought here ... how old is your granddaughter?

If she's drawing 24" I assume she's around 5ft tall, and will probably get taller (people in texas are tall right?)

You're probably going to be into a new bow at some point, maybe multiple times depending on changes in draw weight etc ....

Maybe something like Samick Polaris/Sage? I think the limbs are interchangeable so you could start with a 30# @ 28 or 35# @ 28" ... probably get alot of use outta something like that.

She's 12, we're not tall folks, we're from Colorado actually but that's beside the point I guess. I think the thing to do is just go buy a new bow. She was with us for spring break which was her birthday. I took her to Cabelas and offered her a new Henry .22 rifle or a bow, she didn't hesitate and took the bow. Problem was the Easton was the only thing available. I guess I'll put it away for the younger grandkids and get her into an upgrade right away. I don't want her losing interest with this bow. Thanks again to all of you.
