First Tri lam ( with a few pics)
« on: March 22, 2014, 09:19:00 PM »
I got to hankering to build a tri lam. I had planned to use a boo back, Ipe core and osage belly. I was using my jointer to taper my boo and just as I was finishing up I hit the end of the boo on the turning jointer blades and shattered my boo on the end making it too short. On to plan B. It's now a hickory backed tri.

I'm happy with how it shoots and it seems to be as quick as any I've made yet.

After shooting it in she came out at 44# at my 26" draw and it's 62" nock to nock.

I had my wife take this one a few days ago as I was shooting and sanding on it. Tiller's holding and my camera gal's not home tonight so I'm posting it.

Great looking bow

Very nice, Brad.
LOL on blowing up the boo, done that myself a couple times. Now I start at the riser and work out towards the tips when the boo gets thin. Works great.

Thanks fellas! I'm going to try it out today at my clubs 3D shoot. I'm going by myself, the better half says it's to cold for her.

Thanks for the tip on tapering from the riser to tips Roy!

Yupper, when the boo is so thin, you just can't push it tip first into those blades. But you can drag it backwards across them.

Thanks all. After shooting a round of 3D with it today I have to say that it's my favorite bow I've built to date.

 Jeff W,
This was my first tri lam so I'm green as grass to em but here's what I did.

I tapered all 3 lams before glue up.
Hickory backing was tapered from 1/8" in the center to 3/32 at the tips.

Ipe was tapered from 3/32in center to 1/16 at the tips.

I tapered the osage belly from 7/16 at the center to 5/16 at the tips which still left me with plenty of to work with, I didn't know for sure how it was going to go     ;)  .

On my form I used a 4" center block, 2 7/8 midlimb blocks 12 1/2" from center and 6" tip blocks. I'm going to try 7" blocks on my next one for a little more reflex.

I made it with equal length limbs, a 4" handle with 2" fades. 1 1/4 wide at the fades tapering to 3/8 tips.

I hope it helps you and looking forward to seeing some pics of yours when you get it done.

Pretty bow.
Congrats!

Looks like fine attention to detail.
